This was a challenge that came from looking around my room, thinking about doing an observation drawing. I had woken up feeling inspired and also earlier than usual, so I had plenty of time before class.

I picked up the first object on my desk that gave me the most inspiration to draw: my Fidget plush. I only thought about doing the drawing, not about the skills or knowledge required. I wanted to try, at least.

It was a challenge mainly because I had zero knowledge of anatomy, and the only reference I had was this video from Amaru (brazilian YouTuber):

YouTube AbrirOpen

The tip, provided both by the video itself and by my teachers, was to draw the base structure on top of the reference itself, helping with planning and also giving a sense of the proportion of the elements as a whole. So, I followed the same reasoning for the plush's image:

Curiously, the plush's body was made up mostly of circles. The rest had rectangles on the legs, and triangles on its ears.

The biggest difficulty was the wings: even though they were made of curves, the problem was their proportion and the position of each of the "tips" relative to the body. That last part I had to redo about three times...

Finally, the chest fur didn't turn out as I expected. I imagined that, drawing it this way, I would represent the idea of a tuft full of fine hairs, but since they were too linear and "tidy", it caused the opposite effect. It looks like the fuzz bees have, to be honest...

Drawing 16: Fidget Plush

Drawing time - 2h20

Eu olho a capa original do Shadow of the Colossus no quiosque e "vejo" um game de terror, tudo escuro e sombrio. Madagascar de PS2? Aí sim, esse é para mim.

AVISO DE IRONIA: Eu gosto muito de Shadow of the Colossus.

Hoje... ele é o meu jogo indie favorito.

Eu imaginava a conversa:

Eu me refiro a crença.

  • "Tudo bem filho, compro sim. Onde tem para comprar esta pelúcia?"

Eu queria a pelúcia.

... Veio um estalo. O meu primeiro salário caiu na minha conta.

Overall, I was happy with the final result: the corrections I would make to this drawing would only be details and touch-ups, since the proportions, position of the elements, base structure... It's great, especially considering I was used to drawing faces up to that point.

Alright, that's it about the drawing. You can return to the listing with the button below:

... Wait, you want to know the plush's story? Seriously?

Alright, alright.

Unlike the others, the story of this plush started back in 2012, when I got the Xbox 360, right when the hot new thing was the Games with Gold subscription.

One of the first games to come to the monthly lineup was Dust: An Elysian Tail, and, to be honest, it didn't seem convincing just looking at the screenshots on the Xbox store page. And to this day it remains that way across the different ports (having exactly the same images, to add insult to injury...).

But... I'm glad I didn't judge it back then just by those prints. Before, at street vendor tents, the "quality metric" I followed was the game covers. I look at the original Shadow of the Colossus cover at the kiosk and "see" a horror game, all dark and gloomy. Madagascar for PS2? Now that, that one's for me.

IRONY WARNING: I really like Shadow of the Colossus.

... And the Madagascar game too.

But, unlike taking advantage of the Brazilian 3 for 10® deal, here you didn't need to pay* to test the game. If you didn't like the game... You could just delete it afterwards.

*Of course, you get the game "for free" as long as you pay for the subscription.

Nowadays... it's my favorite indie game. Iconic characters, a fantastic soundtrack, and frantic, stylish gameplay. Years later, I found out it was made by a single person, which made me fall in love with the game even more.

... Ok, it wasn't exactly just one person involved. I'd say 80% of the game was made by one person.

"But what about the plush, man? So far you've talked about Xbox, about the Three-for-Ten from Joe's corner store, but nothing about this plush."

Chill out, dude, I was just about to talk about exactly that.

So, considering how much I liked that game back when I was young, I consequently wanted to buy licensed products from the game. And of course, as a kid, I would go searching the web to see if it existed, even without money to buy it.

Until I found this DeviantArt post.

I still remember the jumps for joy I did when I saw it. It was as if a dream had come true.

... But a challenge came. The belief that "plushies" were a girl thing or a childish thing (more childish than I already was, I mean). I imagined the conversation:

It was only after a while that I noticed how ridiculous that thought was.

Not the Hot Wheels track one. That toy was factually incredible and muscular. I'm referring to the belief.

For a long time, I cared a lot about what others would say. Even about what my parents would think if I showed them this plush. But what really matters is doing what is important to yourself. After all... This plush is for me. As for my parents... They always wanted the best for me. And they wouldn't hesitate to buy it, especially knowing it was something that mattered to me.

So it's cool, right? There'd be no problem buying it knowing that. Let's try one more time:

  • "Dad, mom, I want this plush here."
  • "Alright son, I'll buy it. Where can we purchase this plush?"
  • "... I don't know. I mean, there's this post I saw, but..."

The second challenge.

The official site has absolutely nothing mentioning official products.

What was out there were different DeviantArt posts from fans creating their own plushies of the character, but nothing sold on Brazilian soil.

Description of the DeviantArt post, by the way: Luto_EN.png

At this moment, I took a hiatus from the search for the plush. I stopped exactly at this point as a kid.

The years went by. I hadn't forgotten the plush, but I focused on more important things at that time: high school, college, work...

The plush, unconsciously, remained in my mind. Even though I didn't know how to proceed from that point... I wanted the plush.

... A spark came. My first salary landed in my account.

The first step into adulthood.
The first step towards independence and autonomy.
It wasn't a shortcut.
It wasn't something given by my parents as a "treat".
... It was my achievement.

... HERE WE F#%@NG GO. I'm going to find that plush, and I'm going to buy it.

Intrusive thought from my childhood self years ago, still feeling the bitterness in my mouth.

I started my search with a question:

... Wait, youtubers I used to watch at the time like Core (another brazilian YouTuber) have plushies of characters like Bendy at a time when there was not even an official way to buy them here in Brazil. How did he get one of those?

At that moment, I discovered the existence of custom handmade plushies on the national market.

If I can't buy it... Why not ask someone to make it?

Oh, right! I did some digging and found the person who made the figure for Core, Ms. Zuzza.

... But she no longer works with custom figures.

After a while, I finally managed to find a shop that makes custom plushies and delivers to your home. I sent her exactly the image from the DeviantArt post as a reference.

The artisan accepted, and the price she charged was around three hundred reais (approx. sixty dollars).
Tranquilo.png

The time to produce and ship it was 4 months.

4 months later and where the h#$@ is my plush?!
Fim dos Tempos.png

After a month of delay...

It arrived at my house, right in the middle of a work meeting.

And a red gummy stick thrown in for free.

Tipo...

Valeu a pena.

Menos o mês que atrasou, vá tomar no c-

I mean... The artisan had already sent photos and videos of the result before shipping, but wow... The quality was almost on par with an official product.

Highly detailed, with wings and a tail, and everything. Holding the plush, it even had the stuffing weight of a quality product. Not that light weight of a Sonic plush you buy on the street.

At that moment, the bitter taste that child had carried disappeared.

She finally had the plush she had dreamed of for twelve years.

The fear of what others might think no longer mattered.

The dream was there, in my hands.

Every cent...
Every month that passed...
It was worth it.

Except the month it was delayed, godda-
