Comecei do zero absoluto?
Comecei.
Só dei conta disso quando cheguei?
... Sim.
Eles pediram:
The first official day I started my drawing classes. Imagine someone eager to start the classes and who thought he would do really well.
"Well, I drew a lot in elementary and high school, I'll breeze through these classes. I don't know anything about the theory and logic behind it, but I'll pick it up in no time with what I've got."
I arrived at the trial class, and they did the introductory assessment, showing how you draw today and your linework, among other things...
I had nothing to show, and the drawings I had were about 6 years old or more (The last drawing I had made was actually from high school... Back in 2020).
...But even so, I was determined.
Did I start from absolute zero?
I did.
Did I only realize that when I got there?
... Yes.
They asked:
"Draw a face the way you know how, in your style".
The result was that alien head below (the middle one is the teacher's, just to point out the difference clearly):

... Yeah, you can see I still had a long way to go.
Alright, first face. The teacher starts the drawing with a simple circle. After that, there are some reference lines and measurements following the Loomis method. He was kind and willing enough to even draw a mini step-by-step for drawing the face: circles, pizzas, eyebrow height, eye height, neck shape, among others.

Show de bola, vamos começar a desenhar!
Sabe a cena do filme Whiplash?
Você começa e ajeita conforme for desenhando..."
Awesome, let's start drawing!
... My first difficulty was drawing a circle.
ONE.
F$%&NG.
CIRCLE.
At that moment, I panicked internally. For three hours, I kept obsessing over the same pessimistic thought:
"How is it possible that I, a computer engineer, who got good grades in technical drawing, wasn't able to draw a simple CIRCLE?! Something is clearly wrong..."
You know the scene from the movie Whiplash? The one where the protagonist gets a chair thrown at him by the teacher for not playing to his rhythm?
Imagine it repeating for the duration of the entire drawing class (Context: the class is 3h long). I know it sounds like an exaggeration... But believe it, it really happened in my mind.
I know what you're thinking:
"Wow, so the class was horrible having to go through that torture. The teacher must have been really hard on you to leave a mark like that. If it were me, I'd have already quit the class..."
No. All that torture, that madness... It was the result of me being frustrated with myself. It was precisely a barrier that needed to be overcome. Not in the drawing class, but in my life as a whole.
At that moment, I projected myself as the student and the teacher at the same time. It was my perfectionism hurting more than helping. It was the perfectionism and insecurity: the fear that if I didn't start the right way, if nothing I did was calculated down to the millimeter and methodically, even the effort itself wasn't worth it.
In that scenario, there was no pressure coming from my classmates and teachers. There was no stress. There was nothing actively causing that torture. The teacher was willing to teach, relaxed, laughed and joked along with the students, gave all the freedom and time for the students to draw.
The teacher himself noticed how I was. I had been drawing circles and circles on a sheet nonstop for an hour. He said:
"Dude, don't get stuck on the circle or on making it perfect. You're still in the sketch, there's no point in perfecting it now. You start and adjust as you draw..."
So, I stopped and did exactly that. I borrowed a ruler and a compass and made a base structure of the face following the step-by-step guidelines.
Finally, the result was what you're seeing below: the Frozone from Temu. The Incredibles' egg-head. And on top of that, with crooked reference lines (I noticed that while writing).

Tempo de desenho - 3h (contando surtos psicológicos internos)
Referência: Mini Passo-a-passo do professor, sem personagem específico
Drawing time - 3h (considering internal psychological breakdowns involved)
Reference: Teacher's Mini Step-by-Step, no specific character
Apenas... Desenhar.

Far from perfect and even further from an anime character, but it was the beginning of my overcoming. And also the beginning of another essential factor in drawing: letting yourself go. Freeing yourself from perfectionism. Freeing yourself from worries about the final result. Just... Drawing. Of course, along with a goal, with a methodology, but not letting yourself get stuck. Developing conviction little by little, and allowing yourself to make mistakes.
Drawing is like learning an instrument or a new language. Besides discovering and studying, it's essential to practice on a daily basis. It's producing, no matter how small or bad it may be, it's moving forward. It's forgiving yourself and trying again.
Don't worry, the following illustrations won't have walls of text like this one, only the most important and impactful ones.
