- Utilizar mais o movimento do pulso e do braço pela folha do que a dos dedos da mão;
- Segurar no meio ou borda: esboço e traços mais leves e fracos;
The first character I made right after the Egg Head, the heroine from My Hero Academia. The reference sheet had 6 characters, and right away, my instinct was to draw the faces at the same size. However, the advice from the teacher and another classmate was to draw bigger, almost the size of the sheet (I ended up drawing too big, and underestimated the size of her hair...). This encourages two drawing practices:
- Using more of the wrist and arm movement across the sheet than your fingers;
- Having an overall sense of the face proportions and the position of its elements, like eyes and mouth.
In this character's case, being a female character (softer and rounder features), whole-arm movements are essential here. It's easier to draw a circle with an arc motion using the arm than with the hand.
Curiously, one of the tips given in this video (7:28) that I found at the time was precisely to draw on a large surface:
Oh, and also important, the way of holding the pencil/mechanical pencil also helps:
- Holding it at the middle or edge: lighter and weaker sketching and strokes;
- Holding it at the tip: details and finishing touches.
Since I was at the beginning, the nerves were still running high, so following these tips was harder in practice.
